Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Lanair waste oil heaters.

Differences between Lanair & other brands?

The largest factor that separates us from our competitors is experience. We were one of the major pioneers in the waste oil heating industry, and have been building waste oil heaters since 1976. No other competitor has been building and selling waste oil heaters as long as Lanair.

The top competing waste oil heater manufacturer’s technology has been fundamentally the same since around 1993, and they all still share the same basic mechanics. For example, all of the high quality waste oil heaters today pump oil to the burner under pressure, where the oil is mixed with low-pressure air for atomization prior to combustion. All manufacturers pre-heat both the waste oil and low pressure air, and all major waste oil heaters can handle burning dirtier oil.

Many years ago, waste oil heater technology greatly varied from manufacturer to manufacturer, but now there are very minor design differences which has resulted in increased trust and dependability for the waste oil industry as a whole.

Because the technology is so similar, Lanair has chosen to set itself apart from the competitors by providing Factory Direct Manufacturing & Sales, a key element in Lanair holding the position of low-price-leader in the waste oil heater industry.

Lanair includes free Factory Direct Customer Service via Telephone ( FOR LIFE! ) to all customers. Most competitors cannot provide this service, and you will end up having to pay for someone to come on-site and fix your heater. At Lanair, if you ever have a problem, just give us a call and we’ll do our best to walk you through whatever issues arise, and if a Lanair part needs to be replaced, you can order it directly from us and replace it yourself, essentially cutting out the “middle man” and saving yourself labor costs.

How much will my installation cost?

We can lower your costs by selling you a complete Heater / Chimney and Tank package. We call these our Lanair “Value Packages”.

Average cost is $1,000 to $1,500 less with our packages (tank and chimney).

Costs vary by your building, HVAC charges in your area and tank regulations. If you install it yourself, there will be even more savings.

In general, our Value Packages are a very cost effective, simple installation choice.

Check out our product pages for package pricing information, and Call and Talk to our sales team to let them help you out in your purchasing decision and see what discounts you might be eligible for. There is rarely a person who doesn’t save money on their final purchase by calling in and working out the best options.

How Long will it take to Install by Myself?

It varies depending on building, location of heater, and other factors of your installation environment. The average time falls between 6-8 hours.

Even when installing by yourself, we recommend getting things ‘looked over’ by an HVAC professional. This will ensure your Lanair is running at its best!

Can I have my tank outside?

Your oil must be pumped to an inside feed tank and must be at least 35º – 40º F. prior to be pumped to the burner.

The oil is preheated to 160º F. in the burner.

How much Maintenance can I expect?

It varies by how dirty your fuel is. Tips: Transmission fluid is the cleanest; diesel truck & equipment oil is the dirtiest. The average is 1-2 times per season.

Pre-filter your oil prior to pouring in the tank. ( A mesh screen will help ). Do not mix oil with solvents and parts washer fluid. Do not burn gear lubes. They will cause more maintenance even if mixed with fuel oil. Clean filters monthly. Drain water / antifreeze from tank. Vacuum combustion changer 1-2 times per season.

Annual maintenance according to what your manual instructs is necessary.

How much noise can I expect?

Overall, the noise is about the same as a regular fuel oil burner.

Waste Oil Heater vs Oil Heater Price?

The technology required to burn waste oil is more expensive than fuel oil as it requires an extra set of parts & steps over traditional oil burning furnaces.

The extra price is easily rationalized when you look at the direct benefits of burning waste oil.

This unique form of heating can literally end up paying you back the cost of the entire unit if used regularly.

What can I burn in a Lanair Heater?

Waste Oil (used crankcase oil up to 50 wt)
#1 & #2 Fuel Oil
Hydraulic fluid
Automatic Transmission Fluid
100% used synthetic oil

* Stay away from gear lubes, they do not burn and will cause you more maintenance for ANY brand waste oil heater.
* Hazardous waste is illegal to burn in ANY brand waste oil heater.
* The EPA of the USA does not allow the burning of Brake fluid, and it is illegal to burn in ANY brand waste oil heater.
* There is no UL safety standard for the burning of Used Cooking Oil (vegetable oil) at this time. It should not be burned.

* Note: International customers should check their local regulations, as ‘what you can legally burn’ may change.

What is the life expectancy of a Lanair Heater?

If the Lanair Waste Oil Heater has been installed properly, fuel management has been implemented, and your unit has been maintained according to the manual recommendation, then 10 to 20 years is very common.

How much water can I burn?

Water / Antifreeze will not burn in a Lanair Waste Oil Heater.

Any Water / Antifreeze will have to be drained from your storage tank. Water / Anti-freeze can be siphoned through the ball valve at the bottom of the oil tank.

How much Oil will burn every day?

There are variables that determine how many gallons of waste oil you will burn per day. Variables such as: The outside temperature, the thermostat setting, how often you open and close doors and how well the building is insulated. The BTU output of the heater is also a factor. Waste oil heaters are very efficient. The more they run, the more they save energy costs.

How soon will I recover my heater cost?

Return On Investment varies by location, used oil supply, and amount of regular use.

Typically, you will gain a full return on your used oil heater in 1-2 years, but for someone paying disposal fees a full return can be considerably sooner than that.

EPA Approved

Yes, our Lanair Heaters are EPA approved in the USA so long as you meet the following provisions:

* The Heater burns only used oil that the owner or operator generates or used oil recieved from household do-it-yourself used oil generators.
* The heater is designed to have a maximum capacity of not more than 0.5 million BTU per hour.
* The combustion gases from the heater are vented to the ambient air.

* Note: It is illegal to burn waste oil in California and New York City.

* Note: International customers should check their local regulations.

Waste oil heater as the sole source of Heat?

Yes, you can use a Lanair Waste Oil Heater as your only source of heat, however we recommend you keep any pre-existing sources of heat as well.

A common practice is to use a pre-existing heating setup and keep its thermostat down, so it will only kick in as a “backup” to your waste oil heater.

Take note, that using a waste oil heater as the ‘only’ source of heat will depend on both the size of your building and number of waste oil heaters you have. I.E. – you could not rely solely on a 150,000 BTU unit to heat a shop that may require 300,000 BTU for complete coverage.

Is a Waste Oil Heater Legal in my area?

In most cases, burning your used oil in a Lanair Waste Oil Fired Heater is perfectly legal, however, there are some scenarios where this may not be the case.

* The EPA regulations in America allow on-site burning of waste oil.
* NFPA #21: Oil burning equipment, allows waste oil heaters.
* California and New York City outlaw burning of used oil.
* Check with local fire department and ensure you inform them that units are U.L. listed.
* No waste oil boilers are allowed in Massachusetts.
* New Jersey requires a Permit.

* Note: International customers should check their local regulations.

If you have specific questions in regards to this, please call us and ask a sales Representative.

What is the best heater package for me?

There are several factors that determine the ‘ideal’ heater solution for your building.

Some of the core questions you should ask before buying a Lanair Waste Oil Heater are:

1. What is the size of the building?
2. How well is it insulated?
3. How much oil do you have access to?
4. Do I want a roof or wall chimney?

Refer to specifications on our product pages and try to get an idea of what package would best suit you, or call our in-house staff and let them help you find the right heater for your needs.

Can I turn the unit off at Night?

Yes, but you will have to restart the heater in the morning. Keep in mind that a thermostat controls the heater’s output, and oil in the building must be between 35 – 40 degrees prior to ignition; To ensure this we recommend lowering thermostat at night to 50 degrees to save on fuel and prevent problems from temperatures dropping too low, then raising it to a ‘comfortable temperature’ in the morning. The pre-heater should be turned off when the heater is not going to be in use for more than 24 hours.

* If you will not using the heater for 6-7 days straight we recommend turning off the pre-heaters all together.

Are Waste Oil Heaters Problematic?

There are 3 key principles to eliminating or minimizing problems when using a waste oil heater.

  • Installation according to the manual
  • Fuel management
  • Maintenance

When these key principles are followed then problems are eliminated or minimized. Understanding how your heater works is the responsibility of every waste oil heater owner.

Waste Oil or Used Oil?

In reference to ‘Used Oil Heaters’ and ‘Waste Oil Heaters’, the terms ‘Used Oil’ and ‘Waste Oil’ are used interchangeably throughout the industry.

In our experience, ‘Waste Oil’ tends to be the more common term when this type of heater is being referred to ‘in the field’, but sometimes the term ‘Used Oil’ is chosen to show that, though it is waste oil, it is still oil ‘oil’ and is not ‘Waste’ but in fact has a ‘Value’ associated with it.

Aside from a purely ‘marketing’ standpoint, there is no difference between these two terms.

What else to I need in addition to the waste oil heater?

An accessory connection kit is provided with every heater purchase. This accessory kit includes several components that are relevant to your installation, such as oil pump, filtration kit, thermostat, etc. The customer will supply the 120V / 60HZ electrical supply and air line from their compressor.

Other considerations include; oil tank, chimney kit and accessories. You can visit with your sales person to determine what is best for your best application.

Why is Lanair less expensive than competitors?

There are several components that contribute to our company’s success as the “Low Price Leader” – First and foremost, we sell Factory Direct. This allows customers the option to bypass distributors and wholesalers. By cutting out the middle man, we pass these savings onto our customers. Lanair also incorporates a lean manufacturing philosophy so that inventory and manufacturing costs are minimized.

Does Lanair offer an ‘on-board compressor as an option?

While most customers have an existing compressor installed in their shop, Lanair offers an optional on-board compressor at a competitive price! Simply ask a Lanair Representative and they will ensure you get exactly what you need.

Additionally, If you buy or already own a Lanair Heater and decide you would like to add a compressor, an easy to install kit is available as well!

Can I put a waste oil heater in my house?

Waste Oil Heaters are not EPA approved for residential structures. Waste Oil Heaters are EPA approved for use in commercial and industrial building applications. Barns, pole sheds, out buildings and garages are fine as long as they are not attached to the home.

Who installs units?

The Lanair Waste Oil Heater was designed with the mechanic in mind, including installation. Therefore, the majority of our customers choose to install the heater themselves. We do provide factory direct technical support, via phone, if you have questions during the installation process. Factory Direct Tech Support is at no charge to our customers for the lifetime of the heater and covers installation, operation and service questions.

Lanair does recommend a licensed HVAC or Mechanical Contractor to verify proper installation prior to using your Lanair Heater. Please check with your local municipality to insure compliance with codes and or permits, where applicable.

Can I burn solvents or anti-freeze?

Fuel management is one of the key principles to bear in mind when using a waste oil furnace. Waste Oil Heaters are U.L. approved to burn motor oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid, diesel and fuel oil. Water and anti-freeze do not burn and separate naturally to the lower part of the oil tank. There is a ball valve at the bottom of the oil tank that allows the customer to siphon off water and anti-freeze. Solvents that are not U.L. approved to burn should not be mixed into your oil.

Do the heaters smoke or give off an odor?

No – Provided that the heater and the chimney are installed according to the manual. It is also essential to burn approved fuels and to set the correct oil and air pressures.

Is there a general rule about the installation of a waste oil heater?

Most municipal codes will require the waste oil heater to be a minimum of 8 feet from the floor to the bottom of the heater. This is to insure safety when using in an environment that may contain gasoline or paint vapors.

Can I install a unit in my body shop?

Additional precautions are required when considering a waste oil heater for a body shop. Among these considerations are; approval from your local Fire Marshall, placement of the heater in the shop, and the use of an air makeup ventilation system in your paint booth. These precautions insure a safe application and prevent fisheye while painting.

Why burn waste oil when I can have it hauled away?

Waste oil is a valuable resource when burned. Heating your shop with waste oil eliminates heating costs, used oil disposal costs, and “Cradle to Grave” liability. By burning used oil in a Lanair Waste Oil Heater in accordance with EPA regulations, you protect your business from Superfund Liability and uninsured expense, while gaining one of the most economical sources of heat.
